The Mommy Makeover

Pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, weight change, and aging can affect the abdomen, breasts, waist, and other areas in different ways. A mommy makeover is not one fixed operation; it is an individualized combination of procedures selected to address the concerns that matter to you and that can be performed safely within one surgical plan.[1]

Build Your Makeover

One plan, designed around your body.

There is no fixed mommy makeover. The plan is built from the procedures that address your anatomy and goals, and the combination must also make sense from a safety and recovery standpoint.[1]

Tummy tuck

Removes excess abdominal skin and can tighten the abdominal wall when pregnancy or weight change has contributed to laxity or diastasis. Learn more about tummy tuck at Adonis.

Breast lift, augmentation, or reduction

Breast changes after pregnancy may involve position, volume, skin excess, or breast size. Depending on the anatomy and goal, the plan may include a breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, or a combination.

Liposuction

Liposuction can reduce selected areas of localized fat around the waist, flanks, back, hips, thighs, or other appropriate areas. It may be added when fat reduction is part of the surgical plan. Explore liposuction at Adonis.

Your Mommy Makeover Surgeons

Two board-certified plastic surgeons perform mommy makeover surgery at Adonis.

Mommy makeover surgery at Adonis is performed by Joshua Y. Jacobson, MD and Shana S. Kalaria, MD, MBA. Both are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Kalaria medically reviewed this page for clinical accuracy. The operative plan is individualized around your abdomen, breast anatomy, areas of fat or skin excess, medical history, future pregnancy plans, recovery support, and the total combination that can reasonably be performed together.

The surgeons are presented without ranking or comparison. A mommy makeover is a combination plan, so the right surgeon, procedure mix, and whether surgery should be combined or staged depend on the actual case.

One Operation or Staged Surgery?

Combining procedures is convenient, but it is not automatically the right plan.

A mommy makeover can combine abdominal and breast procedures during one anesthetic when the patient and operative plan are appropriate. That can consolidate recovery, but the decision must account for total surgical extent, individual risk factors, and what recovery will demand at home.[6]

Recent evidence suggests that combined breast surgery and abdominoplasty can have an acceptable safety profile in carefully selected patients, while also showing that some outcomes differ when combined surgery is compared with isolated procedures.[7][8]

If the safest or most predictable plan is to stage procedures rather than combine everything at once, that should be part of the recommendation before surgery, not discovered after the fact.

The Procedure

What happens during a mommy makeover.

Mommy makeover surgery at Adonis is planned at our QUAD A-accredited facility in Torrance. The current published procedure-time range is approximately three to five hours, but actual operating time depends on the procedures selected and the complexity of the plan. Anesthesia and the sequence of procedures are determined for the individual operation.[3]

During your consultation, your surgeon will examine your abdomen, breasts, and areas of concern, then design the exact combination and sequence that gives you the safest surgery and the most natural result.

01

Consultation and planning

Your surgeon evaluates what pregnancy changed, discusses your goals, and builds a customized surgical plan. You receive a full itemized quote with no hidden fees.

02

One anesthesia

The anesthesia plan is confirmed before surgery and monitored by the anesthesia team. Whether every planned procedure should be completed in one session depends on the final surgical plan and safety considerations.

03

Combined procedures

Muscle repair, skin removal, breast reshaping, and liposuction are performed in a carefully planned sequence to shape the abdomen, breasts, and waistline together.

04

Closure and recovery

Incisions are closed, compression garments are fitted, and you go home the same day or after overnight observation with detailed aftercare instructions.

Recovery Planning

Plan the recovery around your real life before choosing the operation.

A combined procedure can temporarily limit lifting, driving, household work, exercise, and childcare. The exact restrictions depend on what your makeover includes, so a tummy-tuck-based recovery should not be treated as interchangeable with breast surgery alone.[4]

During consultation, your surgeon should understand your children's ages, the help available at home, work demands, stairs, driving needs, and any other responsibility that could conflict with early restrictions. If you do not have enough support for the proposed combination, staging the plan may be more practical.

Scars also depend on the procedures included. Tummy tuck, breast lift, reduction, and other operations each create different incision patterns. Your surgeon will review the likely scars before you commit to a surgical plan.

Recovery

What to expect after surgery.

Recovery depends heavily on which procedures are combined. The timeline below is a planning framework, not a promise; your surgeon’s restrictions and follow-up findings control when activities resume.[4]

Week 1

Rest and help at home

Swelling and tightness are normal. Walk gently around the house, sleep slightly reclined, and let someone else handle the kids and the household.

Week 2–3

Back to desk work

Many patients plan roughly two to three weeks before returning to sedentary work after a more extensive combination, but timing varies with discomfort, wound healing, drains, commute, and the procedures performed. Compression may continue as directed.

Week 4–6

Light activity resumes

Walking and light daily activity usually increase gradually. Lifting, repetitive strain, childcare tasks, and exercise remain restricted until your surgeon clears them.

Month 3–6

Full results visible

Contour continues to refine as swelling decreases. Scars and breast or abdominal tissues continue maturing long after routine daily activity has resumed.

FAQ

Common questions.

When is the right time for a mommy makeover?

Timing is individualized, but candidates are generally in good medical health, at a reasonably stable weight, and finished with childbearing because another pregnancy can change the abdomen and breasts again. Postpartum recovery and breastfeeding should also be complete before elective surgery is planned.[2]

Which surgeons perform mommy makeover surgery at Adonis?

Mommy makeover surgery at Adonis is performed by Dr. Shana S. Kalaria and Dr. Joshua Y. Jacobson. Both are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Kalaria medically reviewed this page.

Which procedures can be included in a mommy makeover?

There is no required combination. Common components include tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, and liposuction, while other procedures may be considered when appropriate. The combination is customized to the patient rather than sold as a fixed package.[1]

Is it safe to combine procedures in one surgery?

Combined procedures can be appropriate for carefully selected patients, but safety depends on the procedures involved, total operative plan, health profile, and recovery demands. Published studies do not support treating every combination as equivalent, so your surgeon may recommend staging surgery when that is the better plan.[7][8]

What are the risks of a mommy makeover?

Risk depends on the procedures included. Potential complications can include bleeding, infection, seroma, poor wound healing, unfavorable scarring, changes in sensation, asymmetry, blood clots, anesthesia complications, implant-related complications when implants are used, and the possibility of revision. Your surgeon reviews the risks specific to your plan before consent.[5]

What will the scars look like?

Scar pattern depends on the procedures selected. A tummy tuck generally creates a low abdominal scar and a scar around the belly button in a full abdominoplasty, while breast lift or reduction scars follow different patterns around the areola and breast. Scars are permanent and change over time; your surgeon should show you the expected incision pattern before surgery.

How long until I can lift my children?

There is no universal lifting date because a mommy makeover may include abdominal muscle repair, breast surgery, liposuction, or other procedures. Plan for meaningful help at home early in recovery and follow the lifting limits your surgeon gives you. Childcare demands should be discussed before the operation, not after it.

Should I combine everything or stage the procedures?

That decision depends on the total surgical plan. Combining selected procedures can consolidate anesthesia and recovery, but staging may be preferred when the proposed combination is too extensive, when medical risk is higher, or when recovery support is limited. The goal is not to fit the maximum number of procedures into one day.

Is a mommy makeover covered by insurance?

A mommy makeover performed for cosmetic contouring is generally not covered by health insurance. Coverage can differ when a separate medically necessary procedure is involved, such as a qualifying breast reduction. Patients should confirm benefits and requirements directly with their insurer.
